silence is key

Can you be quiet for a moment? Sit still for 10 minutes? Can you enjoy just being for a second?

I thought a lot about this last night when it was 11.2opm and I knew I could still squeeze in 30 minutes of something before I went to bed. Why do we do this? I was going crazy looking for a new show or documentary I could stream. I had already done my nails and read the news. And then… a thought. I could do a meditation prayer before going to sleep, but it would require some patience and silence. Absolutely not. I can’t right now, right? Or could I? Why was I so opposed to being still for a moment?

For some reason, our generation avoids pain and boredom at all costs. But sometimes they are simply a right of passage to get to where we are going.

It’s difficult to grow unless we allow the pain of a break up or a crisis to release itself. It’s difficult to notice the thoughts that are driving your life unless you freaking sit down for 5 minutes and shut the hell up.

Lena Horne said ” It’s not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way that you carry it.” Have you thought about how you are carrying yourself?

Take some time today. Yes, I know its not the nicest request but really, really relax and try to go blank.  You can do it on the way home or before going to sleep. I’ll tell you now, you won’t be able to zone everything out but… you might learn what thoughts are keeping your brain going while you aren’t listening.

The first time I did this I was surprised to find a very negative theme in my thoughts. They revolved around self-doubt. This was something I needed to address and have been for the past few weeks. It’s made a huge difference in the way I’m handling my unemployment, my job search and my recent break up. I still smile, rarely cry, and am very positive about my outlook. Can you say the same? Could you be as positive in my shoes?

Try it out this week. 5 minutes everyday. You might learn something about the way you are carrying your load.

Anyway- if you’ve ever been heartbroken, … let’s be realistic, you have been. But, for those of you who are a bit sour from their last … romantic adventure, check out the lyrics. I know sometimes when things end we feel like we’ve been left in the dark. Alone.

The good news? There are songs that you can scream to while you are in your pain. And let’s face it, screaming and singing with all that passion bursting from your dark heart is one of life’s little treasures. So sing on, my girls.

Scream on. Enjoy it while it lasts. Because this too, shall pass, my dears.

I sometimes enjoy myself a little Gossip Girl episode review on Gossip Girl Insider but this was just … heavenly. Beware, spoilers included. I’ve highlighted the most obvious WTFs out for you. I know you thought them too. You are not alone.

Show: Gossip Girl

• Blair: “Except Humphrey’s a doughnut.” We bet Dan would have appreciated that. Plus only 1, though, because everybody knows he’s a waffle.
• Of course, Nate is not at all suspicious about why this crazy pretty lady has decided to enter, study, and take charge of his life. Plus 3.
• At the morgue, Serena looks at the outside of a snakeskin wallet, a closed passport, and a generic BlackBerry, and says, “That’s his!” God. Plus 2 because that is so her, but Minus 2 for the police being so ridiculously stupid.
• Serena is strong enough to go identify a dead body? That might be her stepbrother’s? If there’s anything we’ve learned on this show, it is that Serena is not strong enough to do anything. Except defy gravity by standing up straight. Minus 2.

• Nate, after seeing “1 New Text Message” on Dan’s phone, then seeing that the text was from Serena, says, “He said he hadn’t heard from her!” Yes, Nate, that was a new text message. Minus 3, because even Nate knows how phones work.
• Vanessa is good with babies because she lived on a commune. Plus 2, because we were absolutely unprepared to believe it was her natural warmth.
• Why does Vanessa keep coming back? She’s the only person on this show who pretends to have self-respect. Minus 1.
• Has nobody actually asked Juliet what she does for a living? Minus 4.
• Rufus is apparently the only person on the show who remembers last season, and what happened with William van der Woodsen, so he guesses that Georgina has skipped town, and that the doctor she hired for the paternity test is actually a “sex phone” worker. Plus 5. Also, ha. Rufus said “sex phone.” Plus 2.
